What kind of stuff can I do when a) I can't run and b) have no gym/pool access?

I'm not a qualified physio however my experience and just about every piece of literature I've read states that you need to strengthen. If your physio says that stretching is the *ONLY* way then I would question them thoroughly to determine their depth of knowledge in that area.

Sure you will probably want to stretch the area however, if you do not strengthen the muscles involved then you will, every time you increase your load and intensity, continue to suffer with this injury.

I did exactly the same with my Achilles...it was sore, early tendonitis however, doing a programme of eccentric strengthening exercises worked a treat.

Oh it's not the physio saying this. Will try and explain (sorry for boring people!)

1. Had a very similar knee issue about 8 years ago. Lots of (inconclusive) scans, lots of physio. didn;t improve. In the end I "fixed" it by buggering off to canada for 8 months and climbed mountains.
2. Have since run a marathon, various half's etc, not a twinge from the knee. Nadda.
3. This summer did Endure 24. Was fine. A week later felt a slight twinge in the knee. Stopped the run. tried again a week later. Same result. Shut it down and went to Doc.
4. He examined, said ICE etc. tried a fortnight later and still there.
5. Referred to a Knee physio guy. He gave me some exercises and sent me for an MRI.
6. MRI came back as a tear in the tendon. He said that if I wanted to go back to running that surgery might be the best option. referred me.
7. Saw the surgeon specialist yesterday. he said surgery on 50-60% likely to fix it. Should go the route of physio. Asked what exercises I was doing and then came out with needing to stretch and not load the area that I mentioned above.
8. Told to see him again in two months. If physio not working he wants to try PT something, take some of my blood, perform some voodoo on it then inject into the knee.
9. If that doesn't fix it, then look at surgery.

I hope that makes vague sense (and shows my frustration)?

I have a vague idea where you live HB and you are not *that* far from a gym...Ok, maybe you don't want to go before or after work (though are you sure there's nothing near work?) but you could go once or twice at the weekend without too much hassle :)

I could go into the details of where I work, or what I do at weekends, or my financial situation, but that is all very boring stuff. Can we not all just concentrate on the part of my OP where I say no gym/pool?

No offence like. Just saying. If people feel the only solution to this is the gym then just shake your heads towards me sadly, think there is no hope for me, and move onto a person you can help :-)

so a tendon tear is NOT patella tendonitis...that is something completely different and the treatment for that would be different.

Without knowing the specifics and not being qualified I would have to go on your specialist advice however, having said that I had a tendon tear in my knee around 18 years ago (football injury) and post key hole surgery, I was back playing football within 6 weeks.

Yeah I must admit I was a bit taken aback when he said surgery wasn't really the way forward.

I don't really know what to do. I was kinda going along with what he said, if only because he seemed to be saying something different to all the other people I have seen for this injury and the one before.

Actually that just seems to open up a reddit on fitness. Is there a specific section I need to look at? Seems to be various days of the week training methods.

Look at te right panel --> Recommended routine.

Or click here reddit.com

You might want to ask for advice on adaptations with regard to your injury. You'll be able to quickly figure out what you can/can't do.
Just watch for balancing push/pull and muscle groups.
