Some chip mats are not exactly on the start or finish lines which always makes me wonder when to press start and stop. Albeit by the end of a marathon that level of thinking is beyond me

I assume we are talking about perfectly measured courses? ;)

Sorry, no, garmin distances don't count for anything.

I do the same as KB, never thought to use official time in non chip race. As long as my garmin has the full distance recorded then to me that was the time I took to run it.. I will never be in the position that it would mean I was winning the race so to me there is no problem with recording for your own personal record.

Same as V-Rap and UC, and others:

ALWAYS official time and distance for race results, PBs and portfolio. Garmin time and distance for training log. No exceptions.

I'm the same - official results are listed on most race websites so I would always use those for setting my PBs, race portfolio etc - that rule would apply to the running club for pulling together the standards so it seems fair to do the same here. The Garmin times go into my training log - with a note about when I started or stopped if I've forgotten to turn it off ( as frequently happens!).

It is totally up to you and is irrelevant what anyone else thinks. If you are far enough up the field to be bothering the leaders or for a GFA place then they will take the offical time anyway, what you put on your log or race portfolio is totally your decision.

For the record I always take the watch time and I usually start it at the 3k mark of a 10k race. It is a totally false record but by God it does boost my ego.

Joopsy: oh yes. When I say "no exceptions", I mean for me.

Someone else's race times are none of my business (except perhaps the guy who was taunting me about my marathon time, and turned out to be lying about his...)
