From the BBC today:

Thought to be a distant relative of the anaconda and boa constrictor, the snake - named "titanoboa" - was not venomous. Instead it crushed its prey with the constricting force of 400lbs per sq inch - the equivalent of lying under the weight of one and a half times the Brooklyn Bridge.

So we have a new unit of non-measurement to enable us thickies to understand the real world a bit better. Hands up if you find the concept of being squashed by a multiple of the Brooklyn Bridge is more comprehensible than 400 lbs/sq in.

The article is here bbc.co.uk

I think you missed a h from whales in the topic - the snake wasn't as big as the country now full of daffodils, leeks, rugby fans and male choirs :-)

That comparison doesn't sound right unless the Brooklyn Bridge is ridiculously over designed.

No, I'm sure whales are not a valid unit of measurement. Swimming pools and the Wembley Stadium are ok. We can use Belgium instead of Wales if we like.

Didn't More or Less have a thing about Wales being the standard unit for everything?

I also thought the Belgium was a standard unit of measurement especially for ecological problems like deforestation.
