Terrifying and horrific events in Boston, but no reason to think there is any greater risk at London today than there was yesterday realistically? Security might get a bit tighter and moving around might be a bit trickier - hope it doesn't spoil the day for Fetchpointers and spectators generally. I think as everyone says the best we can do is to carry on and have a great day, regardless.

I think I'm going to wear my black Fetch buff round my arm as a black armband. It seems like such a tiny thing, but it would be nice to show some recognition of the incident and solidarity with those who were affected? Thoughts are very much with the victims and their friends and families this morning. :-(

London runners. I am very sorry I will not be there to support you. If I loved anywhere close to London I would. I will cheer and shout and watch the finish line on the red button like I did last year, scanning the crowds for my friends.

I wasn't a runner on 16 September 2001, but I stood as a journalist among the crowds at the start of the Great North Run, just days after the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York. The world felt an even scarier place then. There was no real reason to believe there would be another attack, but we'd had a special security briefing just in case.

I stood in a crowd of 50,000 runners and supporters all waiting for the start. There was an announcement for a minute or 2 minutes silence. And you could have heard a pin drop.

When the moment ended there was a spontaneous cheer and applause. It was one of the most powerful positive, life affirming and genuinely good moments I can remember.

You'll find a way to pay your respects and show your kinship with every runner and supporter everywhere. Make it a good one.

Hi all, this is what Sheri posted in the Boston Marathon Explosion thread

From Twitter -

"London marathon runners are being encouraged to cross the finish line this weekend with #handsoverhearts in tribute to Boston."

I know it doesn't really make any difference, but this strikes me as a lovely gesture nevertheless.

Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

According to their facebook update, all vlm runners are being given black ribbons at the expo to wear on sunday and there will be 30s silence at all starts beforehand. *nods approvingly*

Yeah, I saw that clare. Happy to wear the ribbon, seems a bit strange to do 30s rather than 1 min. Maybe don't want people to get cold or something?

I thought it strange too Happy, but I imagine the waves go off at different times (maybe I'm wrong there, not sure) so if it's happening just before each wave starts, the organisers maybe felt 30 seconds would be better seeing it's going to be repeated on several different occasions.

Just got back from the Expo. They'd run out of black ribbons by about 1pm - they're hoping to have them available on the day, according to the person I spoke to. Also if you're planning on using the Northern Line on Sunday the information given in the booklet of final instructions is not consistent with the Transport for London website, or their signs/information in stations. It seems that the Edgware branch will be open, but the High Barnet branch won't. Enjoyed listening to David Weir.
