So a question for you experienced hill runners….

I did a skills weekend in Glencoe last week and I find on steep inclines (same happened in Lakes last year) when I start my lungs are not happy - legs are ok.

Once I settled down I was ‘ok’ but it’s that initial start. I had an anaphylactic shock a few years ago (very nearly didn’t survive) and they said my lungs had been affected but I don’t know if that is a contributing factor or if it’s just I need more base fitness.

Obviously need more practice on hills and more specifically the big hill terrain, but is there anything else I can also be doing to help my improve lung capacity? I’m going to be off my feet for a couple of month December - mid February but am aiming to do WHW in September (over 4 days) and really went to get lakes fit for some training before then. Thanks.

You possibly just need to start the climb at a slower pace, geordiegirl. Even slower than you think you're already moving. If you're breathing OK once you've got past the first few minutes there's unlikely to be anything much wrong with your engine.

The body needs time to get in the zone. When I warm-up on the treadmill 7 mph is a struggle. After 20-30 minutes weight training 8 mph+ feels comfortable. Perhaps it is analogous with a petrol engined car, it needs to get to working termperature to perform optiminally.
