It may also be worth checking with your local hospital. At mine the physios will take self-referrals.

I injured my knee skiiing years ago. I tried taking ibuprofen etc but it still ended up ballooning a few years later as it hadn't fully healed. I had an mri and turned out I had misaligned my kneecap and had to have physio. As long as I keep it well exercised now, I don't have any problems. Resistance training in form of spin has really helped me build strength in my knee. I would definitely seek medical advice though cos I tried to manage mine myself and hadn't realised how much damage had been done until I finally went

Well, nurse practitioner says it's just bad soft tissue damage, and it'll take at least 6 weeks to heal - been packed off with short course of anti-inflammatories, stomach pills, & a tubigrip, and told if it starts locking/giving way, they need to see me again. No marathon for me, and I'm thinking ultra in August will be out as well :( Can't even cross-train properly until I can bloody move it again.

Oh that's a but tough. Physio is a great idea, mine did some ultrasound on mine when I sprained it, pinpointed the location of injury exactly.

Update - after having a nurse doing health checks at work saying I should get it properly checked, we went to Minor Injuries and I now have crutches for a week to try to take swelling down, whilst waiting for a referral to a knee specialist. X-rayed and no fractures, but they think I've torn medial ligaments (she thought possible damage to cruciate as well, but a vet at work who's had knee problems says probably not, after testing me yesterday! ). So, now a waiting game, but think I definitely over-did it at work Thurs/Fri...

Mine was my medial ligament I tore/sprained but only grade 1. I'm glad you've got some crutches and I hope the swelling goes quickly. Knee specialist is good. :)
