Hello, I'm in the market for a couple of bikes - something hybrid-ish probably. My brother, who is a keen cyclist recommends Boardman at Halfords. Online reviews seem good, so yesterday we went to our local Halfords and had a peak. They look great, that's all I can say about them, because, as usual with Halfords, none of the staff seemed keen to help.
Near the Halfords is a Trek shop so we went in there too, and spent a very happy 30 minutes cooing at the pretty bikes. A very helpful young chap gave us lots of advice and we decided, if we went with Trek, it would probably be the 7.2 FX.
So, do any of you lovely Fetchies have any experience of either or advice you'd like to offer on which bike would be best for our needs? MrW will be using his for cycling to the station and we'll both be using them for a bit of recreational cycling on roads and tow-paths.
Thank you.

All I can say is that I have a Trek and I love it to bits I sat on a fair few bikes and this one just "fitted" me, so that was as much science as I applied to it all

You really need to ride them both, and others if possible.
Both are sound brands.

I'd agree - ride both and see which one feels right. I bought a new road bike yesterday, I've tried s few and went for the one that just felt best for me.

They're both good enough brands. But what other shops are close by?
If you're fairly new to cycling (and the arcane mysteries of cycle maintenance), and other aspects are more or less equal, I would go for the shop which provides the best service.
'Fit' is important, but can often be adjusted quite easily.

... and maybe check if the bike to work scheme operates at MrW's.

Boardman do some great bikes but they are sold by Halfords whose staff too frequently don't want the company to make money. That being the case and all other things being equal, I'd buy from the shop that wanted my cash.

When I bought my Hybrid last year I too narrowed it down to a choice between the Boardman and the Trek. I thought the Boardman was better VFM and the build quality looked better - smooth welds - so I bought that. I have not regretted it. It is a great bike. The only niggle is the front gear change is a bit clunky. The guys at the local Halfords are helpful.
