Seems like quite a balanced discussion. I like Moseley, he does interesting stuff but manages to base it on credible research (IMO but I am a scientist).

As for treadmills, I find mine useful when the weather is grim (a lot this winter!) and the bouncy belt seems more forgiving than road when I'm a bit sore. In fact I've just climbed off after 70 mins on it.

One of the things I love about running as my means of exercising is that I just step outside of my door and go. Perhaps if I could afford a decent treadmill and had the space in the house to put it I might go down that route, but as I can't and I don't then running outside is just fine for me. Sometimes its dull, sometimes its glorious. But it is always on my doorstep, ready for me.

I have NEVER run on a treadmill. Just never wanted to really. The only time it might have come in handy is when the pavements were too icy to run on. I just like being outside generally.

Ditto tony - my only venture ever onto a treadmill was a few weeks ago as part of a quick gait analysis. It felt very weird indeed!

Another vote for "they are a tool", it is so unproductive to set your mind for or against them, no treadmill cares what you think, it is a bit like me deciding that I have a grudge aginst the Black and Decker Workmate.

I see your point, but it's not really a compelling argument against people who prefer to run outdoors for the variety, scenery and what have you. Quite happy to use them, personally, when the weather's bad enough that the outside is no longer appealing.

I've just started work on an offshore oil platform... there aren't any trails or roads outside, so for 2 week periods I either go on a treadmill or I don't run.

Haven't managed more than 45 minutes on the 'mill so far, but I usually do a mixture of speed and incline intervals to keep it vaguely interesting.

Basically I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than run on a treadmill end of discussion

Stupid BBC website says it's on at 20:00 but it actually starts at 21:00.
