Well that's the thing, RooA. I can just up the speed but then all I know is that I did, say, 4 miles that were actually 3.7 real world miles, or whatever, whereas if I up the incline a bit presumably I get to a point where the effort to run a tread-Mile is about the same as a real mile.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

that's probably true too, Olly. It's not my first choice so I'll only use it when the paths are dodgy or on a few occasions where I have to stay in and still need to train.

I wouldn't do the incline thing, if you need to get your HR up then use a faster speed.

So I should be upping speed to a similar HR then, and maybe running for a time rather than a treadie-measured distance? That kinda makes sense.

Incline could put additional stress on achilles. Rolling hills fine, permanent incline bad.

1 or 2% though, Olly, is what they recommend. Good point on Achilles strain.

Yes I second Olly. I have tried a permanent incline in the past { hurt my knees like buggery } rolling hills fine.

I think the actual difference will be so negligable there's not much point worrying about it. The snow will be gone soon anyway.

I would record it all in your training log as if the treadmill is perfectly accurate. If you badge them up as treadmill runs you'll be able to review at a later date how much easier (or harder) the runs were and monitor progress.

If you're settling in for a long run, varying the pace can be nice as well to break up the repetitive nature of the beast. I do my intervals on the tready sometimes just for a change, especially in winter when running fast in the dark is scary because the pavement is uneven. I don't think hammering away at exactly the same pace for an hour is a 'good thing' for me.
