Here's another controversial thought....

"Many runners shouldn't be running speed or interval sessions as a). they are not fit enough to maximise the benefits of the session b). they're physically not strong enough and risk injury c). would benefit from developing a stronger base first".

Thoughts/comments..?

SPR - yep 2hrs 30 for me (off-rd) corresponds to about 16miles. I'll then do roughly 8miles on a tues, 5miles intervals on a thurs, a steady 6-8 miles on a saturday and a shorter easier run on one other evening - that's my base of about 40ish mpw.

Now that I'm marathon training, I upped it initially to 55mpw, and now going up to 70 this week, 60ish next week and then 70 the week after, then taper.

right, thanks - It seems like there's pretty much a concensus that doubles are pointless for under a certain weekly mileage. I may still experiment with them more over the summer though as I'm not really training for anything other than parkruns and we're all an experiment of one... and I did hear that it helps get down to racing weight - your metabolism gets a kick twice in one day instead of once.

Baz - one thing I would say is your 70 miles a week is probably my 50 miles a week in terms of time on feet. An argument for me doubling on less mileage?

Gobi....you'd be surprised at the reaction I get from some runners when I suggest that they'd be better off dropping their interval\speed sessions are doing some more aerobic work and/or strengthening.

SOD, it's very common, a vast number of runners either do the vast amount of their training in the 'grey' zone, or do intervals before they are ready OR do intervals not in relation to their goal. It all ends in tears. But it so boring to say spend years developing a 'base'. Didn't the good doctor, CT, say that development could take seven years? This doesn't match the RW train 10 minutes a week and run a sub-3 marathon :-)

Depends what you're doing it for. I like running, I like counting the miles, I like running faster at times. When you talk about the point in doubles, some of the point for me is in going with it when I'm enjoying my running. Getting faster isn't everything.

Good point, Mac. The counter-intuitive aspect is that to get quicker, better, you don't have to run faster all the time.
