So, T&F gurus, what training should I, primarily a distance runner, be doing for a 1500m at the end of the month, given that I'm also doing a 10K race a couple of days beforehand (not ideal, I know). So, training which helps both.

SPR is your man for training advice. I don't know quite how he does it but he always makes useful comments and suggestions about my events.

Here's our sprint session last night:
Basic set was 100-120-140-160-180-160-140-120-100
Shorter version 60-80-100-120-140-(160)-140-120-100-80-60
Middle rep in brackets because coach decided to drop it. Some of the longer reps group also dropped the longest rep.

Walk back recovs, so pretty tough.

As a codger we deemed it wisest for me to also drop the 120s, this meant I could keep a good pace for all the reps. I was happy with the session (for once!)

SPR - your session looks really good! You should be happy with it.

'the competition sucked me in' - mixed blessing as we've discussed!

Sharkie - I'm going to modify our 4 x 200, 400, 200 3 mins rec jog between everything session on Thursday to just do the 200s so as not to fatigue the legs too much for Sunday so should get to practice some relaxed speed (and maybe getting sucked in avoidance) then hopefully.

J2R - Training for a 1500 two days after a 10k? None? You already know it's madness so why train specifically for it? Can you imagine a coach putting a schedule together for that? I'm pretty sure Mo Farah wasn't training for 1500 when he ran 3:28, he and his coaching team just believed the work they did on speed was beneficial for 5000/10000. If you're doing the sprint stuff (general speed) and high end aerobic stuff then that helps generally. Why the 1500 at that point? There's surely better opportunities to do it?

I'm not a coach or expert on training though. I've done a lot of reading on training but my only experience is trying to apply stuff to myself.

Yes, SPR, I know it's daft, but track opportunities are few and far between here. I'm not seriously imagining I can train for both equally effectively, and the 10K is far more important. I should perhaps have asked whether there's anything I could do for my 10K training which would be likely to help with the 1500m, such as certain distance reps at a certain pace or whatever. I suppose if I imagine I'm training for a 5K I won't be far off at either end.

J2R - If you really want to do the 1500, there's no point putting any pressure on it. If there's 1500 at the end of April, there's surely going to be at least one more mid season which will be more suitable.

5 x 200m with masses of recovery today then an ill advised 6th one off 90 secs as it was the group's last rep (shut down that rep after 150m). 28.3 and 28.1 for two of the 200s, both faster than my official PB (2013). The 28.1 was nice as I learnt from Tuesday and just held form and slowly inched away from the runner next to me.

There's a proposed masters meeting on 24 July where I may do a 400m/200m double if there's enough time between. Sub 60 sec 400m will be tight I think.

I got the session wrong earlier. The actual MD session was supposed to be 4 x 800 with 3 mins rec jog with 200 at 8 pace, 400 at 15 pace, then 200 at 8 pace. Don't think anyone hit the paces, it was carnage and was stopped after 3 reps and then group did 4 x 200 with 90 secs jog rec for the last rep. Very glad I wasn't doing the session lol 3 x 800 in 2:16 just wouldn't be happening.

I did first 200 of each rep in the 800s, then 1, 3 and 4 on the 200s.

The prospect of a 200m PB is inviting. Would the 400 be first though? When I was running 4s as well as 2s I wouldn't have fancied that.

Had this through from our vet's team captain:

We're keeping our fingers crossed that the SCVAC competition will go ahead this year in some form - at the moment we are still waiting for confirmation as to whether the first meet (10 May at Battersea) can be held, but I just wanted to remind you of the dates as follows:

Mon 10 May - Battersea
Mon 7 June - Hillingdon
Mon 21 June - Battersea
Wed 7 July - Perivale

Fingers very much crossed for my home meet at Battersea.

No idea yet Sharkie as schedule hasn't been released and isn't open for entry yet. I agree though that 200 first would be preferable. I wouldn't do anything else that day unless I could run a 3000 after everything as a bit of training. A while away though so plans could change.

I'm not actually sure why most leagues have cancelled first fixtures, must be something on the roadmap
