Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

I'll send it to you in a PM. Basically, there's not a lot you can do to save time on Leg 2 of the JNC, it all centres around how you move between Red Screes and Hart Crag. If you've done the Hodgson Bros. relays before you might be acquainted with the best lines, but rather than following the "accepted" route, you can find a better line (grass) off Red Screes slightly to the N of the wall line, then once at Scandale Pass you can cut off a decent corner that takes you above High Beck Stones and reunites you with the wall line you'd have been following under normal circumstances. Once you hit the wall, cut the corner as much as you dare to rejoin the tourist path up to Dove Crag and onwards to Hart Crag. From there, I don't think there is really much to be saved, once on Fairfield it's the standard BGR route down to the col, Seat Sandal and down to Dunmail. I can send you a map extract with this clearly marked if it would help.

Thanks NE for the above (and the fmail).

Think you've pretty much answered what I was wondering about - basically how far W you go from Red Screes summit to the top of Scandale (my instinct as an orienteer would be to cut diagonally down and hug the wall line, rather than messing about in the re-entrants, especially if they're rocky).

The section above High Bakestones is the one I'm going to need to go and look at - my instincts were again, as you said to cut the corner to avoid extra climb around Little Hart Crag and Black Brow, but it depends on runnability over to the wall line - looks like there's a trod on the aerial photographs, but it might not be there (or obvious) on the ground.

The only other bit I wondered about was whether you could skirt round the W side of Dove Crag to avoid the climb there, because that'll affect what line to take on the above as well...

I guess most of these answers will be solved when I go and reccie it in a couple of weeks!
