There's a pretty whopping error in that Al Jazeera article. It states that Finland has a standing army of 900 000 and an additional 280 000 reserve strength. "Hang on", I thought. "I don't believe that the standing army constitutes over 15% of the Finnish population." And it doesn't. The standing army is (figures vary) around 21 000, the large bulk of whom are conscripts. Total full time defence forces maybe 35 000. The other figures: 280 000 wartime strength, the vast majority of whom are territorials. 900 000 is the reserve strength, which I presume is everyone who has ever served and could still be called into action. |

If you read GlennR's blog from the day of the parade he's picked up on something the MSM seem not to have mentioned. Sweden/Finland adding to NATO is a fascinating question, it would add to Putins paranoia but honestly I think it would lead to a more secure world. |

Finland is pretty proud of its reservists though. It's fairly clear who they need to defend against, and they have armed and trained a substantial part of the male population, over many decades. People have weapons, know how to use them, what the command structure is and what their role would be when the Russians turn up. They would be a very different proposition to the Ukrainians, for example.

If the UK is to start providing support for other countries I'd like to know when the defense budget will start to increase to provide resources etc for it all! What about our defense too? |
