But don't you know? It's all NATOs fault and you can negotiate with Russia. Apparently. |

Tim Snyder is a wise man with lots of interesting things to say. "On Tyranny" should be required reading for every student. |

It's been a bit overshadowed by Putin meeting his fat Stalinist fear-of-flying friend but Ukraine seems to have scored a huge hit on the Sevastopol docks overnight. A landing ship and a submarine taken out, apparently. This follows the destruction of a SAM system the other week, so preparing the ground by crippling the anti-aircraft and anti-missile defences. If they can't stop Ukrainian missiles from hitting their main naval facility there, it becomes a lot harder to hold on to Crimea. |

Yes, it was a Ropucha that they targetted. A few of us have been speculating as to why the Ukrainians have been hitting all the ships that have an amphibious capability, I suppose when you think about it knocking out that capacity makes sense. Mixed reports about the submarine, as you know the Russians don't have nukes in the Black Sea and the conventional boats that are there have limited utility in this conflict.

Muttley Jnr, who is completing a Master's in Defence and Security Studies, tells me one of his recent papers was about how you don't need to have a navy to deny another navy the ability to operate. Some shore-launched ASMs and uncrewed vessels laden with explosives are enough.
