I've read "Berlin" by Antony Beevor and I'm currently reading his book about the Russian revolution. The merciless nature of Russians when engaged in fights against enemies internal and external is quite frightening to me. I don't know how to come to terms with such hate. I can only hope that at some stage their soldiers will lose stomach for the fight and it all collapses quite quickly.

The mine situation is shocking. I had no idea how rich, and productive Ukraine's farming land was prior to this conflict

I've heard similar things from people before. Yes, internecine strife ("мСТдоусобица") is a big thing in Russia, it's hard for us to understand it. I was once engaged in doing some work that related to the North Caucasus region and the dislike and absolute hatred between neighbouring factions was staggering.

Did the west take it's eye off the ball post '89? Did everyone one think Glasnost & perestroika mean Russia had changed forever?

Think it's been said in thread before the fall of Putin needs to come from within and it's unlikely to be clean is it.

Categorically yes Rich, once the communist regime in Moscow collapsed several Western governments gave a collective sigh of relief and almost overnight cut military spending in that direction. Most military and intelligence agencies warned heavily against this madness and well, look where we are.

Ukraine was the breadbasket of the Soviet Union and its incredibly fertile black earth farmland is a major source of grain for Africa. This is one of the reasons why Russia is out to steal it. Russia has a belt of black earth already but it always wants more. It is also already a major grain exporter, and its grain sector is run by the son of the equivalent of Putin's national security advisor. The invasion has nothing to do with Nato or Nazism (in Ukraine, FFS). It's an old-fashioned colonialist land and resources grab. All about business.

DT I'd recommend the first chapter (and indeed the whole book) of Prisoners of Geography to explain exactly why this war is happening
