Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

It is brilliant, in the same way Italy scything down any Spanish player who crossed the line with the ball in the last 10 minutes was in Euro 2016. I don't like it, but I applaud the brutal effectiveness. Keeping/achieving power is an ugly/brutal art.

Molesy - that video is well put together and funny, but I don't have any issue whatsoever with our intelligence services gathering intelligence. I'm happy for them to gather intelligence about me if they want to. I don't know why anyone with nothing to hide would care.

I don't care at all, not one little bit. If they want to check my internet browsing history that's completely fine, although they might find it quite boring.

I think I have OD'd on politics. I just saw a headline that said "Eagle carries off Australian boy" and my first though was - that's not going to help her leadership campaign.

" I don't know why anyone with nothing to hide would care."

Err about a million reasons. I don't want to life my in a goldfish bowl and be judged by actions I may have made 20 years ago when drunk or high on coco pops or whatever. The problem is such authoritarian and over-bearing state means are almost always abused by the state, and its the individual citizens who lose out. The right wing authoritarians don't want it stop there usually, so in America women lose control of their bodies (specifically their wombs), and people have sex in particular ways because it's illegal in certain states. Snooping can never be excused.

It might be fine for white, middle class, middle aged, never do anythings, but anyone who has lived have even half a life, even Tony Benn once remarked he realised he knew MI5 were snooping on him when he saw his dustbin being driven away in a Rolls royce - it is an infringement of liberties, and really doesn't make us any safer.

"I don't want to life my in a goldfish bowl and be judged by actions I may have made 20 years ago " - judged by who? The intelligence services aren't going to have the slightest interest in what you did 20 years ago, least of all to 'judge' you.

"abused by the state" - how?

"in America women lose control of their bodies" - this legislation doesn't apply in America.

Surely monitoring internet activity is preferable to collecting dustbins in Rolls Royce's on the basis of cost if nothing else.

Just because I haven't done anything to be worried about doesn't mean I want others to know what I do or what I am looking at.

Down the road once collecting our personal data has become the norm, then sharing it will become the norm, then selling it will become the norm. - a la the DVLA, an official government agency that sells on your details for profit. I believe they have made £25m from this.

Maybe. Or maybe the intelligence services are just gathering intelligence (as they always have done) for the purposes of keeping our country safe.

If the intelligence services don't have the ability to monitor internet usage, we might as well just disband them as they would be completely useless.

Let's just cross our fingers and hope nobody plans to do anything unpleasant.
At least nobody will know what we've been looking at online. Great.

I must admit to being intrigued as to what Chrisull did 20 years ago when he was drunk though.

Yeah, all that surveillance of politicians with inconvenient views is just to keep the country safe...
