what's the best way to predict a marathon time (the first) ? is it just to double your half mara time and add a bit on? i'm running alot faster now than when i did my last half, but multiplying a 5k time would be too fast...any ideas?

Homer
Pen - get a half that you are happy with - double it and add a *bit* works - the question is on the size of a runners bit

Hey been reading and lurking on this thread a while , a marathon is my ultimate goal but i want to do it in at least 4hrs. As i just started running for real about march this year, a few 'proper' runners suggested i run for at least a year before i do one. Therefore chosen either Dublin or Berlin next autumn. I don't really fill in my training on here but i had better start to get all your lovely advice.:-) thanks to Homer for that macmillan link. Well done lovelylegs and debbie G for your great Marathon times. |

Le Greg - new improved recipe
Penpen - for a first one I'd say take a half and add 30 minutes.

I agree with Greg. Add 30. Once you've done a couple it should be more like add 20. My PB of 3:47 is double my half plus 21. Those calculators are rarely right for the marathon distance! |

Or the multiplier Fetch calculated was to multiply your half time by 2.35

I ran my first two ever Marathons this year in September and October. Ive always hoped for a Sub 4 but its escaped me twice! The first attempt I struggled from 17 miles (4.18) and the second time had a knee pain from 19 miles but still achieved a slightly better time of 4.17. My PB for a HM is 1.39. I plan to do more Maras in 2008 so any advice will be greatly appreciated. Good Luck toeveryone else in their endevour... |
