Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I'm pretty rubbish at judging pace unless I really concentrate on my running but that is because I now train by HR. I have a reliable strap now (PtB, Larkim, and others will know I used to get whacky readings from an optical HRM).

I play a little game with myself on a run where I don't look at the watch for a few minutes and then guess my HR. I can pretty much always guess HR to within 5 beats, 80% of the time I'm within 2 and I'm often within a beat of guessing what my HR is doing.

I'll be using a HR based plan for my next marathon (Valencia), I had it in mind to use it for London but convinced myself that I was going to give 2:50 a shot despite the hotter conditions that I knew (deep down) were going to affect me. Luckily in London I went back to something like the plan after 6 miles but the damage had been done and I suffered a tapered slowing for the rest of the race.

So 2 things I'll contribute here:
- 20 seconds per mile absolutely makes a difference, and

- the best way I can think of managing that is by learning your marathon pace in training (whether stride rate, breathing or HR based).

I think it's unusual for a Garmin to be that far off in terms of GPS that it can't be used to keep you in check pace wise, obviously don't follow it religiously if it's obviously out but 95% of the time surely it's just about right.

So now I'm officially a reject, need to think about 2019 with an intent to PB at at least a GFA time.

I'm not a traveller, and with existing commitments in terms of holidays with the family etc the two best options are:-
Liverpool RnR (late May) - £42
Chester (early October) - £33 (currently)

Chester is known entity, mildly easier logistically and further away therefore more training can be done in advance, GFA there would apply for 2021 VMLM.

Liverpool would be new, potentially give me GFA timings to get in for 2020 VMLM (if I chose to deign them with my presence!)

Anyone run Liverpool with course thoughts? Also thinking that if late April can be hot, late May can be even hotter...

If you were prepared to go to London, then surely Mancs must be doable ? Wouldn't even need to pay for a hotel, just drive to one of the park and ride stations on the SW side and a direct train in to within 5-10 min walk of race start.
Weather is normally decent, and a great fast course.

Edinburgh is pretty quick course - easy to get to on West Coast trains too. :-) G

WW, hamstring seems to be holding up, but I am being very cautious. I did a few kilometres at mp on Sunday and then scaled back as I wasn't sure whether I felt a twinge. I had a massage yesterday and was waiting for a real ouch moment which didn't arrive, so that was reassuring. I am definitely going to be there on the start line and I'll just see whether I hold together after the 20 mile mark.

Baz, I decided to go for the Garmin 645 (without music) rather than replace my 235. Only two runs so far but I am liking that it is smaller and lighter and the optical HR sensor is less pronounced so I don't have a divot above my wrist when I take it off. I've not really tested some of the fancier running information stuff, but I am very pleased with it as a toy such as backlight coming on with a flick of the wrist on this morning's run in the dark and being able to use it to pay on bus/tube.

Larks, does the timing of GMM not work?

I'd recommend Blackpool larkim - up the M6 and across M55 - bring the family along for the weekend. I've not done it for a few years - I thought it was a relatively cheap, no frills, well organised marathon

No, GMM is while I'm skiing so that's out of the question.

Blackpool is a possibility, but even London would have been a push just 3 weeks after a skiing holiday (with the extra draw of being "london"). Blackpool doesn't have that same allure, and I'd be fearful of wind getting in the way of a good time. Though Liverpool has that same issue potentially.

Happy, yep the options with Garmin pay are a bit limited at the moment and I am not with Danske bank.

Larks, you're willing to travel for skiing but not for running...

I think its traditional to travel for family holidays Puzz!

It's schlepping around the country for one day for a selfish activity that I don't do - driving to the French Alps so the six of us can have a ball for a week is a different matter!!
