Hanneke - cashing in your smaller policy to pay for the solar pv could be a good investment.

I had one policy mature during the pandemic, I wanted an annuity and the quotes were more or less what I expected. So I signed up for the annuity, they get requotes done again as there's usually a few weeks between initial quote and actually going ahead. Because we were mid pandemic nobody was buying annuities and I actually got nearly 20% more than initial quotes.

I can remember working with a guy who was talking about and looking forward to his retirement but as his policy wasn't invested in a safer option, the stock market crashing decimated his planned pension. He carried on working for another 18 months but still wasn't as good as he'd hoped for.

Shades, the annuity would pay something like £35/month. My electricity bill is £79/month right now...

I find the secret to success with good living on little income is to reduce outgoings rather than increase income... Can't wait for that electricity bill to go... I earn that back very quickly, even without feed in tariffs. Electricity cost is rising fast...

Haven’t the market been quite buoyant despite the brief covid shock.

I’ve not paid into my pension for the past 2 years when I left the job it was associated with. It’s gone up 60% in that time.

ER, initially 4 panels, but now I am building my herb building with a pent roof, there is room for 8. I think that is 8 KW? I haven't looked into it for several years and things have changed...

Sorry, pitched roof... Was initially having a pent roof...
The installation should provide the herb building, my chapel.and the greenhouse with power. There will probably be a net surplus... As of yet undecided if I want to link into the grid or actually be off the grid. The latter getting increasingly attractive, even though storage is expensive. I just don't like the way things are going and it would be good to be completely self reliant.

That sounds like a nice set up H.
If storage is affordable it’s definitely the way to go, especially as FITs are virtually nonexistent these days, although if you do connect to the grid you’ll get a generation tariff (not sure of the value).
