Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Yes. Did he look at your etchings? Did he look like his etchings?

No pipe, but very dry. He had quite hairy fingers.

Worrying if he shook hands with someone with similarly hairy hands: it might have been like velcro

Brian was not
Just as you’d expect
He was taller, yet shorter
And quite circumspect.

He was younger than many
But older than most
His hair was eclectic
Augmented with toast.

He talked in a whisper
That rattled one’s fillings
and swore us to silence
About all the killings.

He read from his books
And an old Yellow Pages
Starting at A
It went on for ages.

He beguiled us with whimsy
Then filled us with dread
“All of these people
Are sadly now dead.

No time tonight
For questions and answers
I’m not signing books”
There were uneasy glances.

Instead of a biro
He drew out a gun
“I’ve got all your money
Now I must run.”

He picked up his satchel
Laden with dosh
and left us all staggered

We’d thought he’d be posh.

^^^ "The Departure of Brian Bilston" - up there with Service's "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" I think.

A genuine 1 star review of You Took The Last Bus Home on Amazon:

"An excellent collection spoiled by the final page.

I really enjoyed the poems in this book. I'd heard Refugees used to great effect at a Primary School Assembly. What really spoiled it for me was the mention of Eric Gill on the very last page. Why, I wonder, couldn't some other typeface have been used? Or why did it seem important to draw our attention to Perpetua? The man had sex with his teenage daughters, for goodness sake!"*

*To be clear, this allegation is made against Gill, not Bilston.
