I just finished French Pleat, but Anne Tyler. It's my favourite of hers so far.

Recently finished Black Boy (Richard Wright). Autobiographical. He was born in 1903 in the southern USA so grew up under the Jim Crow laws. Not just a "how awful it was" book, though (it certainly is that; the conditions of life for Southern blacks were excruciating; they seem to have had no rights whatsoever); his analysis of interrelationships among people is astonishing.

The announcement of the Booker prize short list leaves me in the unusual position of already having read 2 of them, as I've just breezed through Alan Garner's Treacle Walker now. Review follows of it when I've worked out exactly what I think of it (it won't be bad, he's a national treasure in my eyes).

Looking forward to that review of Treacle Walker.

I’ve only read Elidor: once when I was young, and once recently as a nostalgic “treat”. Except that despite fond memories, I thought it was mostly terrible :-)

Very old book and aimed at children, so assume not representative of his later output.

For some reason I was convinced it was about Gilbert and Sullivan so I spent the first few chapters mildly confused as to where it was heading. That is year 2005 of Owlies challenge done :-)

Ah, I was under the same impression, am I thinking of another book?

This was about Conan Doyle and a solicitor called George. Gilbert was a William apparently. I yomped through it - neither stilling nor flowery and much less singing than feared
