Helena Bonham Carter would be good, or Tom Hiddlestone, either would blow the budget though

My 2p would be a younger actor and not an already known name.

Yes - load of famous names will be dangled out there and then a younger actor and not an already known name will be slotted in..

Richard E. Grant in full Rickman tribute mode would be a sight to see! :)

TBH you could probably put Kermit in the role given the variability of the acting abilities of 3 out of 4 of the last incarnations of the Doctor.

After all, we've established that the Doctor isn't actually Gallifreyan, and their gender isn't fixed, so why should any other aspect of their appearance be?

I suppose actors are to an extent constrained by the nature & quality of the script. Russell T. is likely to sharpen up that aspect of the new series, amongst others.

I don't think Smith, Capaldi, Whittaker or Tennant can be particularly separated in terms of their raw acting ability. It's been the scripts and the plots (mainly) which have let any / all of them down at varied points with Capaldi and Whittaker being particularly badly served.

agreed, Larkim. I really liked capaldi but feel he was badly let down by the script and plotlines

A lot for me is on who the companion(s) is/are. My initial dislike of Matt Smith was tempered by Karen Gillen lighting up fairly middling writing. I found Clara very meh, and so much of Capaldi's output was underwhelming. Bill Potts was a big improvement, but by that point I think the writers had pretty much quit.

I really wanted to like the newer series, but I simply cannot abide Bradley Bloody Walsh, and equally dislike John Bishop, so I'll probably abstain from watching until RTD kicks things off - hopefully the start of a bright new era...
