TMW, that's exactly the connection that I made when I read that story.

Merkel is now desperately trying to put the genie back in the bottle. Her largesse may make her a saint in the eyes of some, but plenty of people think she's a fool.

I'm reminded of the Samaritan scene from The Life of Brian. "let me share your burden", he says to the prisoner dragging his own cross towards his crucifixion. The Samaritan takes the cross, and the prisoner clears off, leaving the Samaritan to die in his place.

I agree quite a lot with SFL, but don't you think that at election time the BBC bend over backwards not to be negative?

Sadly, the media in this country are typically negative, and it's said that a country gets the media/politicians it deserves. (But I hope that's not true for countries that don't have at least a two-party approach to politics).

Let me say, I regret the persistence of this thread. The title was meant to refer only to a fringe event at the Tory conference, and I still think the title is justified for that one speaker. But it's not a good title for general discussion about politics.

Can the UKIP thread bear this burden again?
