I've never raced a mile, but my best mile when I set my 5k pb was 7:37. That was at my complete peak in August last year, and I've lost a lot of fitness and speed since then. I'd hazard a guess that 6 months of solid training, no interruptions, no injuries etc.. 6:58 for a mile.

I think a mile is governed by genetics. I reckon 5:5x would be the absolute maximum.

And don't think six months is needed. If you're a short swing quick potential no improvements after three months.

Every distance is governed by genetics to a point but a mile is not a sprint and still has a high aerobic needs. Go look at what elite milers do.

6 month is not enough to achieve your maximum potential unless you already have a massive base (aerobic and speed).

I think we should have a virtual mile race at some point....see who was sandbagging, see predicted their pace right and see who was wildly off the mark. Could be a bit of a laugh.! ;O)

In reality, of course there isn't. But in my imagination there is!

Current mile PB according to my wonderful Garmin is 7:07 but with 6 Months focussed training I think a minute could be knocked off that maybe a little more if I really put my mind to it!

Interesting. Are you fixing the weather as well? Doesn't need to be great, just a bit above freezing for Winter. And providing a gym membership? And a modest stipend for living off?

6:35.
