For those who don't know, the MarathonTalk podcast asks (nearly) all of its interviewees a stock question - if we could give you 6 months of perfect training, injury free, and with all the daily toils removed from your world, how fast do you think you could go for a flat out mile on the track at the end of those 6 months.

How would you answer?

If you're currently injured, imagine magiccing away that injury, but the starting point has to be today - how fit you are, how old you are, etc etc.

Any takers?

My current road mile PB is 7:30, so with 6 months perfect training and on the track I would like to think I could get 7:15.

Thanks WM!

Just taken a look and 5:29 for me would take me to a 73/74 age grading (on a good day I sneak into 70 at the moment), so I'm definitely being optimistic!

listen to MT most weeks

have only ever done one timed mile and that was 6;10 so would be looking for a 5:45-50 mark.

Lol, about 10:00...

I'd have used that perfect training time for something other than speed :-p

You have reminded me though that I promised to do some speed work this year so the Fetch RNR team can make the cutoffs :-)

OK, here we go, bear with me...
I've only ever run 2 timed miles
Current mile PB 7:41 (wava 55.66%)
wava rating for longer distances varies, but always lower

wava rating for shorter distances varies, but is always higher (highest 69.06 for 100m)
If I could replicate best wava rating for a mile, I'd run 6.11
I'd settle for that

I reckon you'd make a lot of gains over six months doing nothing else.

So if i could knock out a 7:30 now, i'd want to be under 6:00

i reckon i could get under 7:00 with only a month of part time focus, if i REALLY wanted to :-)

Currently 6:32 but have only ever targeted longer distances. 6 months targeting only the mile... I reckon I could get it down under 6:00.

Not going to though!
