Me either. Done some Zwift and some walking, which doesn’t quite cut it.

So. Given that my last MTB just about pre-dated the widespread use of the internet (it was 20+ years ago), I need some guidance on where to look for an MTB.

I want a 29er (I am tall) and for what I want, a hardtail will be more than suffcient.

Beyond that I'm a bit clueless (I *do* have a couple of roadies) when it comes to MTBs.

Budget is under £1k. If possible in the £600-800 range.

Mainly to be used for traily or mixed stuff/communting perhaps in the winter and stuff like that.

Oh so so many choices to go for :-)

When you say trail riding, what sort of things are you thinking? Gentle bridleways, or the rocky, rooty, or otherwise gnarly ones?

Mostly the former, but wouldn't rule out a little of the latter

I won't be doing anything mega technical

Virus do always get well reviewed. I don’t know anyone who has one though. But you could always start here, with some reviews:

mbr.co.uk

I know lots of people swear by Alpkit Sonder bikes, but they look to be above your price range... there’s a new XC bike for £999 which might be a decent choice for what you want to do to be honest.

I have a vitus and I love it. I’m not the most knowledgeable and only had my 10 year old entry level specialised to compare it against though.

I don't know much about MTBs myself, but both Chevin and Wheelbase seem to have a decent focus on off-road stuff (I'm aware of at least one regular mtbr in the former), so possibly worth having a chat with them to see if they can advise.

Since the last appearance of Kaph, some time ago... there are now three wheel sizes, and now new plus (+) tyres for the even more adventurous!

26 / 27.5 (650b) / 29 / 27.5+ (650b+) / 29+ / fat
whatever you ride, enjoy it :)

Gravel also welcome :)

Also, is 26 dead yet?
