We’re even further south than you, Dai. On the Gower. Nic’s been surfing today...

Skinny tyres outing to the seaside this evening. Interesting in places and a bit of hike a bike involved. And then a lot of ascent to get back to the car. N had to stand in a stream to wash her shoes after having stood on a jawbone in a bog that still stank of dead sheep. Great ride 😂

We also got the bikes out to the seaside today. Not many dead sheep to report on, thankfully... quite a lot of climbing, rocks, and amazing views. I was glad of the eBike, as usual when riding with Nic... well, ‘with’ Nic.

A question regards changing the gearing on my MTB

It's SRAM X01 11 speed, 32T chainring, 10-42 cassette ( ie range 3.2 down to 0.762 ).

I find the lowest gear ( ie 32/42 = 0.762 ) not quite low enough for a couple of local regular climbs, and dislike having to get off and push.

So how best to get a lower gear :-
a) put on a smaller chainring, ie 30T ( would give me 0.714 ), but would lose top end, which is not a huge issue ( down from 3.2 to 3.0 )
b) change the cassette, don't think Sram do one, but could get a Sunrace one (11-46) that's compatible I think. New ratio would be 2.9 down to 0.696, so lose quite a bit of top end and wider steps in there than at present.
c) Expensive option, change groupset to a 12 speed so I get the wider range, but keep narrower steps. For this option, is it just chainring, chain, cassette and derailleur I need to change, or would I also need a new shifter ?
d) lose some lard and get fitter :-) :-)

Any other options, or other pros/cons I've not listed ?

Good news: I managed to source a mech hanger so my bike isn't written off because of an obsolete part that only costs £12 :)

Bad news: My bike hasn't been written off because of an obsolete part that only costs £12 so I can't have a swanky new bike :(
