I couldn't find an active existing one of these - so I thought I'd start one in case there are others out there with a similar aim to me - which is "sub4 would be wonderful but a bit of an ask so 4.0something is also ok". I'm in week 3 of my training plan with a half marathon on Sunday that I am going to try to run at target marathon pace.

It's not very active but I think that what you have described is pretty much the aim of this one. Note the title deliberately 4 hours rather than sub 4 fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=31521

I'm happy to contribute. Unless it is a hilly tricky course I always aim for around 4 hours. Over 99 26.2 marathons my average is between 4:05 and 4:10 with 52 sub-4.

As I naturally have sub-4 pace the key to success for me is high volume lowish intensity. Perhaps because I've run so many the twenty mile run in training is no longer required. Just as many as possible between 10 and 16 miles.

My marathon PB is 4:12, but I lost a lot of time in the last two miles of that one as I'd stopped at the last water station and my legs didn't want to go again! I'm sure I could get sub 4:10. Not sure I will ever get sub 4 though.

Hmm Becca - not sure why that one didn't show up when I searched??
Fenners I think your experience would be really useful!

I should add, the 4:12 was from my own written plan running 4 times a week. This time I'm using TrainAsONE which changes (almost) everytime I upload a run. No idea what my longest run will be this time round!

That sounds challenging WM! I have constructed a plan based on a 4 hr one in a book Mr AL gave me (and I can't remember the author's name, will have to check when I am home). It is more time than distance with a long run max of 3 hrs - but I have tweaked that to make sure I get to 20 miles (which I think will take me longer). I've also taken quite a bit of advice from one of our club runners and co-coaches.

25 maras done 2011-2016, all between 3:50 and 4:20, most on or around 4:00. I have not mara'd in over a year due to a persistent pelvis injury, only just getting back to running 6 miles, never mind 26!

I have a ballot place for VMLM this year but will be deferring. Alanis Morrisette would call it ironic that after years of failing in the ballot, I get in the year I'm injured!

I used to use RW's smartcoach for my training plans but it has been discontinued. I had a look at TrainAsOne but found it off-putting when they suddenly made some of the features "premium" (i.e. started charging!).

I started out when it was all free, then opted to pay the £6 a month as its still a lot cheaper than paying a coach! After my marathon I might opt for the free version to see what the difference is. What I am finding interesting is the slow runs are a lot slower than I was doing, but the interval paces are more challenging than I'm used to!

AL, the plan is all based on time but with target paces so you get an approximate distance for route planning!

I am trying to slow my long runs down *a lot* - this morning I tried using heart rate as a guide - staying in zone 2 (under 128) defeated me as I wouldn't actually have had time to do the distance I was aiming for and make it to work at the scheduled time, so I settled for the low 130s and that was closer to my new long run pace.
