Hills of death you have been running really well this year and from your recent parkrun times I think it is just a case of making it official. If you are not too far from Kings Lynn there is a fast 10k there the beginning of May. Hoping this will be my benchmark race and aiming for under 46 minutes.

Velociraptor I am surprised you have never run a sub 45 but wouldn't it be fun to try ? Have you ever concentrated on the shorter distances?

Chunky you can be our inspiration šŸ˜

I have started reading this thread from the beginning to see what has worked for others. I started my campaign with 5 x 3 mins hard efforts last night with full recoveries Legs felt light and fresh today so have completed a two hour run at 9.33 pace.

@forever yes, I managed 44:44 in a real 10k race last month. A sub 22 5k is next on my list. I'm currently in marathon training, the race is on 8 May, so I won't train specifically for fast, short races until later that month.

I'm planning on reducing mileage over the summer and focus on shorter races, 5-10 km to get my speed back. I ran a 5k in 21:20 on an officially measured course in 2016 and 10k in 44:48 in 2018. I managed to beat the latter in marathon training, so next up is a) getting a PB over 5k and b) improving over 10k. Maybe I'll try a half in autumn before I start the marathon cycle for a fast marathon in spring 2023 again.

PS: I got 22:39 in my local parkrun last month, too. It's not looking bad, with a bit of speed training I think I could get back to sub 22 for the 5k.

It would indeed be fun to try, forever. I've never concentrated on shorter distances as in doing the appropriate speed sessions regularly, though I throw myself at 5k and 10k quite often and my marathon training mileage is probably about right for racing 5k.

It does sound very promising Tipsku and well done on your recent sub 45 minutes!

Look forward to hearing of your progress post marathon. In the meantime enjoy your taper and the best of luck for 8th May!

I think I would be very tempted if I was you, Velociraptor, to do some race specific speed sessions and get a new 10k pb.

Best of luck with your marathon HOD. I take it the midweek league is three or more 10 k races? A good way to get better over the distance. My best times were when I raced nearly every weekend šŸ™ˆ

Solo thank you. I'm doing my last half marathon distance run on Sunday and then I'll reduce volume for the race. I'm feeling good so far. No taper madness yet :-)
I agree with you, racing regularly helped me to get faster and I've had my best times when I raced at least 2-3 times a month. I've entered the 'Stadtrangliste' which is the city championship series in Leipzig, 12 races from March to November, you need 7 to qualify for the final standings. So far, I've done 3 of them; a 6k hill race, flat 7k and 10k races in parks and woodlands. Next up 5000m on the track. I've never done that before. I'll report back how that went.

Hills of Death (HOD) Good luck with your marathon. Your 5k and 10k times are impressive, you're on the right track.

Tipsku as long as the weather is good a track 5km should give you a good time. I have never had the opportunity to race on a track but think I would enjoy it. Have you got a time in mind for your marathon?

I have a 10km on Sunday. Looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time!

I don't know what to say. I have just run 44.53 in my 10k which has given me my highest wava ever of 83.28. I really wasn't expecting that!
