I'd imagine at the entirely physiological scale it's about finding the where declining level of activity induced "damage" crosses with the ascending level of activity induced "improvement" which will presumably be different for everyone (and different in the same individual depending on factors between the two activities).

And yes, I know it's not really possible to be quite as precise as that!

Mental fortitude then overlays on top of that. I'd lay a bet that you, Gobi, have that in bucketloads!

Larks - I believe in good training, the head needs to believe but without the training the head just helps you be stupid. Fine for a completer I guess.

SPR - QUITE :-)

Nothing to argue with there (which is a shame for me :-) ) But even so, some people are better at being resilient when it gets tough, and whilst you can't do that without the body being ready for it, you can't push your body unless your mind is strong too.

Different sport but I recall Obree failing to break the cycling hour record one day, so he went back to the velodrome early the next day and broke it within his 24h velodrome booking slot :-)

That sounds nuts especially when you see how riders look after some attempts!

Obree was a very individual individual.

To stop his aching body seizing up, Obree then took the unusual measure of drinking pint upon pint of water so that he had to wake up to go to the lavatory every couple of hours through the night. Each time he got up, he stretched his muscles. On the next weary day, he was up and out within minutes, at the deserted velodrome by 7:55 am and on the track ready to start just five minutes after that. He had barely slept.

Brunski - race both, mostly because Donny is very oppressive if you get a hot year...
