Bryan Burnett picked me at random and called out "Let's have some great support for Fergus" over the PA system as I passed the gantry for the first time. The resultant crowd noise was awesome, and I thoroughly enjoyed my few seconds of targeted crowd support!

I didn't like the announcer man. as I crossed the line he said "we now have less than 500 runners out on the route!" which was a lovely confidence boost...

Fair enough MN, I can see how that shout-out may be less motivating!

Though in all seriousness it's a long day for them isn't it, and he was giving lots of people support. I'm glad you got your moment of targeted support

I'm always in total awe of the six to seven hour finishers. It takes serious mental strength and determination to keep going for that length of time, particularly if they're suffering physically too.

It may have been your vest that got you Bryan's special attention Fergus! M_N as we headed back to the station we kept hearing the guy from the radio station saying mile 17, not sure if he knew it was laps! (I'm assuming that wasn't BB??) |

I agree with Fergus about the effort involved in running a 6 hour marathon, but we ended up abandoning our water station before the last runner & her 4 bike escort had finished their final lap in 7 hours 40mins or so. It's probably not for this thread but volunteers are out there for a long day so maybe there should be a cutoff of about 7 hours if folk are going to walk slowly the whole time? |

I believe the cut off was around 7:45 for this one. though if it starts when the last person crosses the line that's over 8 hours race time. it is a very long day for volunteers for sure.

Sounds like everyone enjoyed some parts of the race, and that some of the problems maybe weren't quite as bad as were feared beforehand. Hopefully the organisers will learn from this and make it better in 2018, let's remember some of the disasters than EMF have visited upon us over the years.
