OH dug out a baby shawl from a trunk in the loft - it'll have been in the trunk fro about thirty years and has picked up a rust stain. It's knitted from a man-made yarn. Vanish has reduced it a bit but it's still visible. I see on the internet that rubbing with lemon juice and drying in sunshine might work and I'll try that tomorrow. Any other tips welcome please!

I never found sunshine did anything and IIRC it is better for organic stains anyway?

Depending on how bomb proof the yarn is, I’d consider soaking with equal parts vanish powder and bio for a few hours (cold water) then rinse a few times and pop it through on a 40 wash with like colours.

It seems pretty tough yarn sweetpeas. I've soaked it in Vanish but not added the bio detergent. Thanks, I'll try that.

Sunshine is excellent for bleaching stains (not sure how I know that, given my location!). I would definitely give the lemon juice/uv a go.

You need a sequestrant if it’s rust. Something like Calgon if you have any

Sunlight is good at killing mould / fungal stains etc

I think Stain Devils have a rust specific one. Otherwise another vote for Vanish and BioTex - initial water temp not above 40 or you’ll kill the BioTex

Thank you all. I left the shawl doused in lemon juice out in the garden in bright sunshine all day while we were away at FiL's funeral. It's done a really good job - the stain hasn't completely gone but is much much less obvious. I'll have another go with the same thing tomorrow then if needed will try the Vanish and Biotex. I'm feeling a lot more optimistic tonight :-)

It's possible that leaving it in a bowl of clean water with a ball of kitchen foil scrunched up on it might just shift a bit more stain if everything else fails

Many stains can be removed by an overnight soak in wash powder. It’s powerful stuff bolt
