Was he awarded it for being British or Scottish?

How can Andy Murray win SPOTY and the Davis Cup win Team of the Year??? Murray hasn't done anything (no grand slams) other than lead the team to the Davis Cup, so IMO either he wins the individual award for that OR the whole team win the team award but not both.

Well done Andy Murray. Nelly the main prize is a public vote so not affected by who wins other awards

Issue isn't that they won team and individual awards, but you have to look at the players Murray beat on the way. Not many Nadal's, Djokovic's, Fed's in there. It's a low ranking event IMO, credit to him for putting full beans into it, however.

But far from the finest achievement there. The old rule that it usually goes to the one who did their thing on BBC TV applied I think. No cricket on BBC, no contenders in an Ashes winning year for example.

It was a public vote though so no "old rules" really apply. I would say if history is made or something that has not been done for a long time is achieved then that goes a long way. His unbeaten record through this Davis cup alongside the fact Britain haven't one it for a long time makes people notice him.

Andy Murray for the main award - agree although I was surprised that Chris Froome wasn't in the frame.

The Davis Cup team would seem OK but it has generally been a one man show. The coach of the year seemed to be biased towards NI as it was in Belfast. Mark Sampson was more obvious choice (3rd in the women's World Cup and best ever placing v. European Championship qualification).

Chris Froome - no personality! Plus most people do not care about cycling even more so in a non-Olympic year

TRO, fully agreed, but I didn't want to quite so dismissive given the fact GB have been so poor at tennis forever.

ElD, yes it was a public vote based but it was from a shortlist put together presumably by the same people who awarded them the team prize. If you take Murrays contribution to winning the Davis Cup away (because the same people are saying it was the team who won it) from his performances this season then he wouldn't have even made the shortlist. Remember he was only added at the last minute after the Davis Cup win (with Fury, as there's normally only 10 on the shortlist).
