Hi all

Been Diagnosed with a sports hernia by my physio.
He's given me some exercises to get on with whilst not running to assist rehab.

Just wondering if anyone on Fetch has had experience of this injury and would be able to share how their rehab went please?
Thanks

Thanks Binks and cheers for your link.

I'll have a ganders at your blog.

At the moment physio seems to want me to try rehab for 3 months first to see if that works, if not then yep think it'll be an op.
Cheers

I have had 3 hernia ops, ask as many questions as you like. :-)

2 x Traditional and 1 x Laparoscopic.

If I could offer one piece of advice, DON'T ignore it, yes it is common BUT if you end up being unlucky like me it will become a real problem. All mine where seen too ASAP and even then it caused me quite a few problems.

The sooner you get it sorted the better. :-)

All mine have been right inguinal hernia's.

GOOD LUCK!

Hi Pedro

Thanks for your post and your advice re not ignoring things.

I've read that these things can be tough to diagnose.
When my physio diagnosed me, he said one of the tests he did was 'inconclusive' but that a sports hernia was the most likely culprit.

So being a bit impatient I took it upon myself to book in with a groin/hernia specialist up in London (I live in Poole) next week to see if he can do any more tests or not.

Please can I ask, apart from pain how were you diagnosed - i mean with or without an exploratory op?

Please can I also ask - did you go via NHS or private for your diagnosis and ops?

Many thanks in advance
Cheers

My story.

I had a niggle in the groin area which, over a couple of months, got worse until I was forced to stop running completely.
I thought it was an Inguinal Hernia as there was a bulge which I had not previously noticed. I went to the doctors and after tests and scans it was decided it was not a Inguinal Hernia. (the bulge was nothing either)
A Sports Hernia (Athletic Pubalgia, Gilmore's Groin) was offered as a possible alternative and I was sent to a physio.
The physio wasn't convinced it was a sports hernia and I was left to get on with it, none the wiser and still suffering.

I couldn't run even a few strides without pain. I also couldn't do lunges and couldn't raise my legs straight. (I used these two exercises to test my recovery and I still do them most days to make sure the area is still sound)
After months of inactivity there was no improvement so I did my own research.
Doctor Google always gives the worst prognosis and I was seriously thinking I would never run again, at least not without surgery.
I started a programme of rehab/physio based on stuff I found on the web (Legs, core work, hip flexors, adductors, abductors, posterior chain etc) and after 3 month I tried running again, but it was too soon, another two months and a couple more false starts I did managed to make a full return to running.
All in all I was out for 11 months. With hindsight if I'd've take the niggle seriously and stopped a lot earlier and had know what the problem was (or might've been) I may have only missed a month or so.

Thanks for your post Marshallini.
Jeepers - sounds like your experience was a real test of patience.

I can relate to a lot of you've said and like you did, I think I'm going to really have to apply myself to the rehab if I want it to work.

(Cue purchase of a swiss ball and complete change in exercise routine....)

Great to know that it can work though - many thanks for confirming this.

Happy running now you're back on it

I had one years ago, keyhole surgery, really quick recovery and no issues since.

Again any questions fire away.

Hi Lammo Thanks for posting your reply.
Great to hear that post surgery can be problem free.
Please can I ask how did you get diagnosed and treated - via NHS or privately?
Many thanks

When standing i had a lump / bulge in my lower abdomen, that went away when i was laying down, it was entirely painless and didn't cause me any issues, but i knew it wasn't right.

So i just went to my GP, pulled my pants down and showed him my bulge...

He said he thought it was a hernia, but referred me to somebody to be sure, i was fortunate enough to have Bupa medical insurance, so was seen in a week or so by a specialist (don't be put off by the industrial sized tub of KY jelly on the side), we discussed the options, keyhole surgery or a big slash, and said keyhole was the future, recovery was much quicker.

About two weeks later i had the op, general anasthetic, although they would have done it under local if i wanted, apparently they squirt a mesh of glue over the area.

Recovery was really good, i was signed off work for two weeks, but was out walking slowly within a couple of days, and really enjoyed my time off work :-)

No issues since, *touches wood*

Good luck and keep us posted.
