First proper look at this thread. Those photos of Leicester made me a bit weepy. I recognised the red brick mill instantly

Interesting, DT, it's not my part of town so I've not run that way normally.

I’ve been involved with textiles for a long time and have several customers (and friends) in Leicester. My dad had family there too so although I was born and bred in Derby I have a strong connection with the city. I’m missing it at the moment

DT, I was struck by how many garment related businesses there are in the part of town that I ran through yesterday. I think that a lot of Leicester's heritage is in that area but it's good to see it going on.

Large chunks of traditional East Midlands manufacturing was involved in the hosiery trade. Knitting, dyeing and garment making were huge industries right up to around the Millennium. My mum worked for Viyella in the 60’s and Dalkeith in the 70’s

There are six or seven dyers in Leicester dyeing (off the top of my head and under normal conditions) maybe 200 and 300 tons of primarily knitted fabric per week plus a few printers doing a further 50 to 100 tons

A good proportion of this fabric (if you think of typical t-shirt material a lot is like that) is made up locally for likes of Pretty Little Thing and Boo Hoo. Some of the dyed fabric is sent to Bulgaria, Romania etc for same. Garments are also made up from imported fabric from China, Turkey etc

Next has been based in Leicester since 1986. I worked in a large factory in Derbyshire that dyed huge volumes of garments, tights and yarn for mainly M&S from 1982 to 1999

Apologies for going off topic

G is for groove. We have a paddock and have created a path round it with running laps during lockdown
