Maybe not grippy enough for you but how about Inov-8 terrafly 303's? I bought a pair for the winter as an alternative to road x-233's but not tried any serious offroad stuff.

fozzy , it's just likely the wave harrier doesn't suit you . I've ran rocky 100 milers in them , recently flew down iced up rocky fells and paths and had no issues .
when it comes to fell/trail shoes I think total bollocks is often the order of the day . my advice for what's it's worth :comfort is paramount and not everything will suit everyone . grip and protection are nice but most of descending is in your head so don't get to hung up on it or believe the 'it'll stick ice etc' it's all shite. it's mostly foot placement and confidence .
for the record I use sportiva , today good shoe I wouldn't put anyone of buying. ino8 x talons I got given (I won't buy most inov8 now because they fall apart to stick and aren't fit for purpose with the exception of tim 319 ) , had kanadia and it does the job (bit tight for me ) and for winter /deep mud shoe I've found nothing better than the £30 start fitness own make shoe .
at the moment thought the wave harrier does it for me and I can usually get a pair from sportsshoes (because I know my size ) for £40.00 which I like. I've never found spending more money makes me faster either.

actually happy , take a look at the start fitness cheviot 2 . it has good toe protection . it's a little to grippy for summer whw but will do the support job and be excellent on the open pentlands.

The amusing thing to me is that I came across the Mizuno Ascends totally by accident. The Endurance Store were flogging 6's for £30 in an end of line sale. Used them on the fells of Cumbria and loved them. The second pair cost more than £60 but the third pair were zero cost as part of MotM prize

funny enough I did the same fenland . I was in buying a pair of 319 and saw the mizuno 2 on sale . bought it for training and shorter races saving the 319 for the big races (as I have on confidence any inov8 will last two minutes ) and after wearing them a few times I ditched everything for them. when you can run 80 miles of rocky hilly routes in the wettest fells ever and still not get a blister it's telling you it suits you .
I guess I'd never thought of them before because mizuno just don't do the saturation advertising or sponsoring of the fast lads like most of the others do.

Fenners, Stef wore Mudclaw 272s (the red ones) for her BG. I guess they (and the previous grey 270 ;-)) have been about the most popular shoe over the last few years for the round

I loved my Mudclaw 330s 5 years ago, but they wore down pretty quickly (soft rubber - good for stickiness, rubbish for durability!) They'll have changed a lot since then tho. :-)G

flip, Stef was living in Southampton when I met her via the FRA forums. She joined Keighley and Craven when she moved up to live with me around Christmas 2011. Her family live in the South West and she was a member of Exmouth Harriers for a good while
