Just gels for me during runs - I love the High5 ISO Gels (http://www.runnersneed.com/high-5-berry-iso-gel-singles/energy-&-recovery-gels/running-specialists/fcp-product/1034?listing=true) - I find them much more palatable than the SIS ones, and they're a bargain at 99p each too.

For after long runs, I opt for a poached egg on toast, or a chicken sandwich! I used to love the Frijj milkshakes, but lactose intolerance makes those an enemy now.

The Chia Charge flapjacks that I use contain sea salt flakes so they aren't too sweet. Clif bars go hard in cold weather so are a bit harder to chew!

A good old ginsters peppered steak slice on any long run,

also just started using dates they seem to work very well

I'm rebooting this one.

I'm going to try a new tactic.

Regular viewers might be aware that I frequently have cause to run repeated laps of lakes in or around the Home Counties. It just so happens that I'm going on tour this year and doing more varied watersides to run along.

After several years of experimenting and discounting different brands of gel, I finally found one I liked. However, last time round, I lost the ability even to stomach those, so fuelled on Red Bull and Coke to a less successful effect.

During these lapped events I have a small box which contains a variety of different foods. This box is not refrigerated, so in weather like today I'd be reluctant to store a pork pie or a tub of coleslaw in there. I could provide a small refrigerated pack, but this would cause additional faffage.

What I'm after is something that can be bought in shops or motorway services or made at home using ingredients available in shops or motorway services that produced minimal litter and that can be eaten while walking with meaning in a generally forward direction, that would store in such a box.

A banana is a good call, but that would only provide part of my energy requirement. An apple would take too much eating, and to be honest I'd rather be able to fall-back on savoury.

I was contemplating Marmite buns and crisps, but does anyone have any other gems that they think would work. Those of you who do the more interesting events, are there any foods from the checkpoints that have really hit the mark and that you look out for?

The last really long event I did, I appreciated packs of roast beef and horseradish sandwiches at the checkpoints :) If you bought them from the service station on your journey, they'd probably be OK for a good few hours in an insulated box.

A selection of stuff from the flapjack-and-muffin shelf, and several different varieties of crisps or other savoury snacks.

After a few bad runs with gels, I have taken to Dextrose tabs instead. They are cheap, work well (although a little slower acting than gels), easy to carry and they taste nice.

In the morning for breakfast I like to have Soreen.

DeeGee, without the faffage of refrigerated boxes, why not just your storage box of choice with one of those cooler-block things that you find in picnic / thermos boxes? They're also useful for icing injuries!

I've dug a little insulated bag out from the under-stairs cupboard. Combined with the boy's cooler-block, it fits nicely in my box (thus letting me still store a spare garment and the other assorted crap that I seem to take to these things.

It's a start. Now I have to work out what I'll do in the case of a multi-day event, not having access to a freezer...

I'm going to see what I can find up Co-op tomorrow to take to Pitsford on Sunday. I think a bit of experimentation might be needed for a while...

Obviously, all bets are off for Manchester, London and Windermere, where I'll have to take pot luck whether or not I boke.
