He had such huge bravado, such self-belief, when he was in his prime, which was only mildly tempered by age. Always entertaining, I thought he was fantastic when I was growing up (in a darts household - both my brothers were very good players). He tarnished his reputation with some poor comments later in life though. A shame he's gone, but hardly surprising given his lifestyle.

Indeed. Here too. We loved darts. The board was in the kitchen behind the door. We used to move the table out, cover the floor off we went. Dad

Oops....

Dad even had a set of optics to hang on the wall to give it a properdarts feel.

Compulsory viewing back then. Lowe. Wilson. George. Deller. Rees. Brilliant.

...Mike Gregory, Cliff Lazarenko, Bob Anderson and co. were so entertaining, coupled with their Bronze Bully appearances on Bullseye on Sunday afternoons.

With Leighton Rees and Jocky Wilson already departed, Eric's loss is equally as sad.

I played darts against Eric Bristow at a charity event back in the late 80's. He was a world champ at the time.

He started on 1002 and I started on 501.

I got to a finish and fluffed it.

He stepped up. Treble 20, Treble 18. He then took one of my darts , sat on the floor , put a blindfold on and hit Double 16 to check out.

:-)

I shook his hand and said 'No one likes a smartarse Eric'. He pointed to the crowd in the room who were all on their feet applauding.

'Are you sure about that ?' he said 'Now get off my stage'

Absolute legend :-)

RIP

That's a great tale to take home. The younger of my two brothers was in the army and managed to book Eric for exhibition matches on camp twice, once in Germany and once, I think, in Hong Kong.

I do hope they repeat the Sports Life Stories programme of Eric that came out a few years ago, that was cool.
