Just looked at the elevation profile on Fetch and the course seems like a big hill until mile 5 then nicely downhill for the next 15?

New route this year, only one lap of the town, then added mileage by not following the road at Elan

Might be doing this, not done it before but folks at the club have - yes the general consensus was "up for a bit at first then downhill"

Does anyone know if it is possible to enter on the day, does it fill up?

Before the course changes the hill started at 2.8 miles and topped out at 6.1 miles in which time you climbed 900 feet. There were other noticeable uphills about 14 and in the last mile into town.

Oops, I entered on the day in 2007 but every year since have pre-entered just in case, I think I'm No 31 this time.

Only Lake Vyrnwy and the Cwmcarn Scenic 7 can match this (in terms of road races), fell races are a different matter.
It makes me want to weep when people drone on about things like the "Great Con" Races or that Marathon being the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I'm in. Hooray for races that start at a civilized time!

You're still going to have to leave the midlands at an uncivilised time to get there Nat :)
