I just retired a pair of trainers - mine last about 400 miles if I am lucky. It seems that since I started logging these things in 2009, I have retired 47 pairs of trainers, so a rate of about 4 pairs a year.

How may pairs have you all retired?

I wonder if we should all be recycling them somehow?

I've retired a few pairs over the years. They get downgraded to dog walking and eventually gardening. If I retire them because they cause niggles but they are still wearable, I take them to the Salvation Army shoe recycling bin at our village playing fields.

Mine tend to last about 500 miles. I used to downgrade them for dog walking or gardening, but still ended up with too many (also don't have a dog anymore :-( ) I now take them to the recycling bin at the running shop.

All my running shoes become everyday trainers when I retire them.

I bought my first running shoes ahead of my first marathon (VLM) in 2003. Thankfully, I haven't needed to buy that many since. Partly because they have all lasted well (apart from a Saucony pair which gave me blisters after every long run) and that my annual mileage isn't that great.

I leave mine next to a local homeless shelter. I hope someone gets some more use from them - they’ve always been removed by the next day.

13 retired pairs and about 500 miles was typical until I started wearing Hoka Mafate and Altra phoenix. With these it's 600 miles and over 1000 miles on the phoenix. It's usually the year beginning completely worn away that kills them and they are so trashed they are only for for the bin.

in fourteen years on FE, I have added 31 pairs of trainers - and only retired 8. I may need a bit of an audit. They tend to be in bits by the time they leave the list.

Distances tend to the 600-700 km, with a few pairs (generally the heavier ones) getting over the 1000.
