I probably won't bequeath my entry fee again. Why accept people who do when the organisers can get more money by accepting others who pay their fees once accepted? Yes, I know it's incorrect and an additional 1k places are offered but for a company who boasts about the money that it raises each year, why not! |

...in the same way, it's interesting that there are so many Golden Bond places charged to charities at £350 each yet decreasingly less ballot and club places. Is the VLM all about making money or are these additional payments actually paying world class runners some stupidly high appearance fees to run in the race? |

Surrey Phil, Think there was a programme (Channel 4?) about that a few years ago. I remember a colleague ranting at me about it when I decided to run the Great North Run for charity in 2011 or 2012. I'd love to see a breakdown of the London Marathon funding model. Something is clearly put aside to 'subsidise' the other runners too. London Marathon entry was £32 last year and £35 this year. Compare that to the cost of running the other World Marathon Majors or even a smaller UK marathon. |

It's one of those sporting events that needs a rethink from ballot places to charities. Some charities have loads of Golden Bond places and smaller ones have to settle for a one year in five Silver Bond, just because they have supported the race longer. Money-wise, the entry fee is reasonable so long as you get in. Why not make taking part for ballot runners the same as a charity Silver Bond place - you run no more than once every five years (or less). By so doing, everyone who wants a place gets one in a reasonable time frame. On the plus side, it will also stop the same Z-list celebrities taking part every year! |

It might have been on that Despatches documentary about the London Marathon on C4 a few years back, but don't most if not all the London Boroughs that the race goes through wave their costs for it because of the economic benefits of having such a big event passing through the areas? That's why they can charge such a low entry fee.

Didn't know that postie. Might well be the case. Phil, 55% of the 247,000 ballot entrants this year had never run a marathon. If they insisted that those entering the ballot had run a marathon in the previous year or two then it would increase everyone's chances. Did they not do that in the past? I've got a vague recollection about picking up an entry form from the TSB Bank in the late 80's or early 90's and at least getting the impression that a previous marathon was a requirement. London clearly sees the charity aspect as its niche in the marathon majors. They make a huge deal about how much money is raised for charity each year and I can't see that changing in the short term. |

The 55% is a pretty interesting statistic, donran. It was only after my third FLM in 2008, I received a post-race magazine highlighting numerous other marathons in the UK. Maybe a lot of the 55% see the VLM as the only marathon rather than a preferred one.
