If I’d known I’d inadvertently picked one of these I would’ve chosen another. Read five, a tiny bit through a sixth bbc.co.uk

I’ve started 4 of those, only read one all the way through (Bleak House)

A Little Life was unpleasantly dire.

A suitable boy I really enjoyed in a Don Juan way - a lot of verse but really a readable novel. Don Quixote I thought was great, and War and Peace. Moby Dick left me completely cold I speed read it for no good purpose. I enjoyed Proust a bit but after three books I was becoming increasingly languid and could barely ring the bell for tea. Middlemarch I don’t even remember as particularly long. God help me with infinite jest I won’t be reading the footnotes. I am very grateful for book group for the monthly break

I loved Bleak House, have never attempted (or, really, been tempted by) any of the others except A Little Life which I started twice and gave up on twice.

Maybe one of these days I'll read Middlemarch.

Currently reading Graham Greene's 'The Human Factor' in which the protagonist (a version of Greene himself?) has difficulty engaging with 'War And Peace'.

Any recs for 1980? I'm stuck.

I recommend Ridley Walker by Russel Hoban

Or for something lighter, How Far Can You Go, by David Lodge.
