OK...I'm looking for experience, advice, and comments on the effects of racing/running post ear infection... On Sunday I ran (and I use that word in the loosest sense) Chester Marathon and had the mother of all positive splts (1h:47/2h22). The issues started around mile 6...I was running well, feeling strong, breathing was good, and splits were in and around the 07:25/mi - 07:30/mi pace, when suddenly I could feel myself draining. It was although someone had turned on a tap and all my glycogen was leaking away. My plan for the race was to pop a gel at every water station (roughly every three miles) as per my training, and as per the plan I'd done that at the first two. I was really surprised to start draining so early in a race (especially as I had ensured I'd eaten plenty of carbohydrates during the preceeding five days) and was well hydrated. The problem was so bad that I decided to load all remaining between mile 9 and 14 and had none left for the second half. I don't feel it was lack of carb loading (glycogen) or going off too hard that caused the issues as everything happened way too early in the race and my breathing was relaxed, controlled and easy...I suspect that there must have been some 'other' underlying cause and this brings me onto my recent ear infection. Many will have noticed that just over two weeks ago I suffering with vertigo caused by an ear infection. My GP put me on a course of antibiotics which I finished last Thursday...my question is, could my shoddy performance, energy drain be related to either a). my antibiotics, b). my ear infection..? There's no other logical explanation for what I experienced in my eyes and I was wondering whether any of you fellow runners have experienced anything similar.? |

t'was odd...my training and recent running (GNR) would have put my finish around the 3h:25m mark, and I should have been easily able to manage a very comfortable under 4, but I just couldn't muster anything beyond a shuffle, or run/walk routine.

I would say that both could be to blame a) the antibiotics working out your system and b) the infection running its course. I am no marathon runner and no great expert but when I have sinus problems, I find I have no energy what so ever. However dont take my word for it. As Mick n Phil says, someone will be along who has more knowledge. Hope you feel better soon. |

And you are sure the infection is cleared...(see my recent thread)? Antibiotics do wipe you out for a period of time I find. |

so...the general thoughts are that the experience I had on Sunday could well be related to the recent ear infection.... I kinda thought so too....just wanted some re-assurance that I hadn't turned into lard ar$e over night... |
