Longwayround [LWR]
I've been off work since November because of that bug that's going round. The first two weeks were, in retrospect, not so bad. I had a headache for a fortnight, couldn't taste a thing, had a day in bed with a raging temperature and generally felt a bit flu-y.

In week three I still had the headache and the flu-y feeling but the following week felt good enough to go back to work as a teacher. That's when I realised that I'd not actually spent any time standing up, walking round or talking to people for a while. The walk upstairs to my second lesson of the day finished me off. I've not been back.

On occasion in the last two months I've pushed a not very full trolley round the supermarket and needed to pause to get my breath back. The doctor gave me an inhaler which helps. Sometimes it's felt that post-viral fatigue / ME could be a consequence of the virus. I'm sticking to wearing a mask while out because, even though I probably could claim an exemption, I also can manage if I take things slowly. I had a chest x-ray yesterday.

Today I went for the first thing that could be considered exercise since November. Those 6 people who bought shares in me on Trader must be licking their lips! I went for a 'brisk' walk. By brisk, I mean 'slightly faster than an amble, sufficient to raise my heart rate'. It lasted a mile. I'll see how I feel tomorrow.

The point of this thread is simple: I won't be alone in wanting to find a path back to running and cycling after the Bug. I cannot see another thread on this subject. If you want to discuss your experiences in dealing with getting active again, if you want some support, or if you just want to be supportive, here seems as good a place as any.

Correct me if I'm wrong, LWR, but it sounds like you've fallen foul of 'Long Covid'. That's a long old haul you describe - hope you ARE on the recovery road now.

Inside Health on R4 this afternoon had a whole prog devoted to exercise post Covid

It does rather sound that way! I shall give Inside Health a listen, thank you. I want to get fitter, but I know that pushing myself too far could have the absolute opposite effect.

It turns out there is another thread by the way. It's in the Useful Links over there.

No. Not there. There. That way.

I don't know if you have already found it but there is a long covid and endurance runners group on facebook facebook.com

Also, I would be grateful if you could join our University of Nottingham study looking at the effect of covid on runners. Whether you are healthy or have had covid we would like any runner to join us to answer a survey and share their garmin or strava data so we can monitor training load and help identify risks of injury and recovery along with recommendations for training and recovery.

Please visit runningthrough.org to learn more about the study. Thanks
