Meanwhile, Rosie Duffield MP has resigned as party whip for breaching covid-19 restrictions. So......doing 'the right thing' has not actually gone out of fashion. independent.co.uk |

In my more paranoid moments, I sometimes think this is a deliberate tactic to make the public doubt everything. By creating such confusion we get the idea that all politicians are liars, there is no truth and so any idea is valid. Then I look at the Cabinet and realise that you shouldn't attribute to malice what can more easily be explained by incompetence- a sort of political Occam's razor. In sadder news, on one twitter thread, Cummings was described as a key worker. The not unpredictable retort to this came from several key workers who pointed out that they had obeyed the rules. They were told that being mere shopworkers, lorry drivers, cleaners, nurses, didn't really match up to the importance of keyworkers such as Dom. I had thought one of the positives of this crisis was the recognition of and due respect given to those who perform the most important jobs in society's functioning. Seems like I was wrong. |

Dio, although it's the media's job 'highlight indecision, ambiguity, and obfuscation', I think they also have a responsibilty to give advice and clarity. They also can 'highlight' without 'taking great delight in'. And they can give clear guidance as t the way to behave as lockdown is relaxed. If and when we're back in extended lockdown, and/or 20-40,000 people in hospital and 400 - 600 deaths a day, I think the government, media and some members of public will be a large part of the cause. But hoping I'm wrong and we steadily decrease the infected rate. |

I think it would be difficult for the media to bring clarity to the current muddle. The only bright spot is that the scientists seem to have finally found their tongues and are making clear that the government decisions fly in the face of the scientific advice. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the number of cases will rise.

Fizz :-)
I think she resigned for meeting him during lockdown whilst he was still with his wife and therefore not in her household. But I’m not certain.

if he'd been a single man, in a separate household I bet she would have found a DC-esque excuse

That’s the way it’s been reported Fizz. Well, meeting and going for a longish walk, while not in the same household. |

Three stages to political honesty: 1. do the right thing 2. resign if you get caught doing the wrong thing 3. do the wrong thing with impunity Labour managing a 2 with some MPs is better than a 3, but really they should all be at 1, especially given the current situation. |
