Think my highest place was 11th in a parkrun when a) I was much fitter, b) a bit younger and c) only 65 people turned up ;-)

I've finished first VM50 in a marathon, 8th place overall. It was a) a small event and b) day two of a weekend double marathon, I hadn't run day one but most entrants had. As people have said, right event on the right day :-0

I've been first in my age category at parkrun quite a few times. But that was because in the olden days when I'd just turned 60 hardly any women my age were parkrunning so it was first out of two or three. Nowadays, there are so many of the blighters ;-) - and I'm getting ever closer to the next age cat - I'm lucky to be in the top 5 :-0

50-54 has been far more competitive than 45-49 was, probably because there are more runners overall. I'm up to 55-59 in a couple of months, hopeful of regular age group podiuming again.

I was first in my gender age group in a HM - but I still didn't get the age group trophy! Only a single age group trophy was given out and it went to the lady who finished a few places in front of me!

Love all the silly banter here, that velcro ripping image made me chuckle. But only as a counterpoint to the seriousness of grabbing that important first place.

On a serious note, stick with it JamesT. That competitive instict makes running (and racing) take on a whole a new dimension. I've been lucky enough to be competitive inthe odd race, where the field was, let's say, "favourable". A tourist parkrun win when I steadily overtook the first three runners and really dug deep was far better than a "win" at the local parkrun with what I think is still the slowest ever first place for a male. And I take great pride in that worthy accolade. And finishing way down the field but with a PB is still a better memory for me (NB quote above).

Use it as a good motivator and if you get a taste for it, train harder and race harder. But always choose your battles wisely.

Slowest ever park run win would be an accolade I would certainly be proud of. Equally happy with 107th place today with a 22ish hungover effort.
