Anyone recognise this?

Pain on side of right foot
About the middle of my foot, definitely on the side and not underneath.
Hurts more when running up inclines
Hurts less on declines
Has happened the last three times I went running, the last two times I have had to keep stopping.
Walking is fine
No swelling or tenderness.

It has happened in my old trainers and my new ones so I don't think it's the shoes. I also don't think it's my plantar fascia. I'm rather hoping it's not something I have to stop running for too! Any advice gratefully seized upon...

I hope this doesn't come out wrong - have you got your shoes tied pretty tightly? It's just that I had a similar pain but when I loosened them off (a lot!) it felt better, I think my feet were swelling a lot more than I anticipated thus the pain. Sorry, it sounds like I'm being a bit cheeky and stating the obvious but I promise I'm not, took me ages to realise that was it!

Maybe it's worth having someone video you running to check its not your form. If it hurts uphill then videoing uphill, downhill & on flat would help to check how you move.

Jambomo - do you know what, I haven't actually tried that! Will try that on Monday.

Sharon, I don't think anyone I know has a video camera but I know my knees sink inwards when I run (I have spent the last six months trying to concentrate on keeping them straighter, with some success) and I overpronate quite badly with my left foot - but am neutral on my right.

I know this thanks to Sweatshop's gait analysis in seven different shoes and parkrun photographs!

I wonder if it's because the last three times I ran it was with a cold/chesty cough and I was tired and not concentrating on keeping my knees straight. Hmmm...

Could it be mild tendinitis? That's the exact area that was causing me trouble a few years back when I was diagnosed with it. Pain on the side of the foot, fine walking, dodgy on inclines...have you really hammered it in a race recently, or could you have been otherwise overtraining? Hopefully it's not so sinister, though!

Can't be overtraining - I've only been running twice a week for nearly three months and the three runs it's hurt on have been my only runs in a little over 2 weeks (horrid chest cold).

Will try looser lacing on the trainers Monday.
