I've always, rightly or wrongly, thought of Tempo and LT as being the same and set them at about 10M race pace. I've also done the intervals on P&D at 5k race pace.

Going back a bit in the thread, to the discussion on how closely you follow the plan, it was my understanding that the initial plan with the book was to dissect marathon training and provide information for runners to build their own plans. The plans were added at the end for those who wished to have this done for them, therefore I see them as a loose framework and they can be adjusted as needed.

I often do my LT runs in 5M/10k races as I'm crap at doing them on my own.

There's only so long you can follow the plan until you find that races are rarely on Saturdays, and if you race Sunday instead you don't want to be doing a long run the day before. For P&D they state clearly that the tempo run is about 15k/HM pace so 10M pace will be about right. The intervals should be 5k paced as well for a VO2 workout, and the strides are defined as speedwork.

Right, I'm away home to try and save myself from scoring another blank after no running at the weekend!

First day on plan today calls for 8 miles @ general aerobic pace with 10 x 100m strides. So is that 8 miles plus the strides or 8 miles including the strides?

The weekly mileage indicates that it's part of the 8 miles, but I always do the miles plus strides.

I skipped the strides this morning. Started on the first one and got a sharp pain in my glute. Not risking it, so just the 10 miles general aerobic run. Apparently I've to go back out this evening for a recovery run!

Not going to beat myself up about not fitting my 5 mile recovery in today. Didn't finish my 11 mile MLR until 8 last night and would have had to be up at 4AM before OH went to work this morning or out @ 9pm tonight and am going to have to be up at 5AM tomorrow anyway to fit 9 mile general aerobic run in. The perils of having a wife who works shifts and a young family with karate commitments and things. Did cycle the 12 mile round trip to work :-) Would not have missed if it wasn't a recovery run.

About This Thread

This thread was initially about the 70-85mpw 18 week training plan from Pfitzinger & Douglas's excellent book Advanced marathoning. It's since widened out to include all the plans from P&D for any marathon. Maybe one day we'll get the thread title changed.

Current and planned P&D plan followers include:
