What is written, is written.

But why should it have been pointed out? The young man, very briefly toying for the first time in his life with metaphysical questions, opened the case, and found it was in fact a case of whisky. "That's more like it," he thought, and without the slightest compunction, set about doing it justice.

At least, it was his idea of justice. To any whisky-lover, it would have been sacrilege.

Anatole had been brought up from his mother's knee to respond to Anatoll, Anatolly, Aynatoll, Aynaytollee and every other possible variant of his name.

He picked up the phone. No, this is the 20-teens, he swiped the screen on his phone. A voice told him, "You are in the Grand Finale."

It really wasn't his fault that he thought he was *finally* being allowed to stay in the Grand Hotel on his next business trip.

"Integers are pointless," observed Anatole to the Regius Professors of Maths, English and Logic, whom he was interviewing with a view to selecting a suitable university for his offspring.

"You may say that" replied the Professor of Logic, "but between us we can prove that you are wrong, right, simultaneously right and wrong; and tell you the one about the neutrino that walked into a bar."

Having received sudden illumination regarding his "Sitz im Leben", Anatole has decided to take up jogging. Or running, as it now seems to be called.

He consults a well-known magazine and works out from the adverts that he requires running shoes, socks, a T-shirt, a "running short" and a "running tight". He wondered if that was one for each leg.

On making his purchases, however, he realised the prices were higher than he'd expected, so, as money was running short, he decided not to buy the running short.

It was with some surprise that he found himself to have collected several hundred thousand pounds for the BBc's annual charity day from members of the public who assumed that he must be running thus attired in aid of the aforementioned event.

Anatole was always thoughtful in choosing his Christmas presents. He thought and thought and thought, but he virtually never came up with appropriate ideas.

He'd bought among other things two captive Daleks and several packets of triffid seeds. He numbered each present, and created an Excel spreadsheet to work out in a random manner who was to receive which.

Not many people could get random results out of Excel, but here, Anatole excelled.

Mrs Anatole began the arduous task of unpacking from the Christmas cruise she had surprised her husband with. Unpacking would normally be left to the staff, so that they could sort the laundry and wrap the gifts she had brought back from their trip. But the "sensitive" nature of a particular purchase meant that on this occasion allowing the staff to rummage through her luggage would be unwise in possibly the worst way.

Downstairs in the kitchen Anatole was puzzling over the instructions he had been given for microwaving their supper.

"Dear Vladimir, I think it would be a mistake to invade the Ukraine. It won't help our plans to dominate the world. Wait until Anatole has sorted out his master plan. Love Mrs Anatole."

Anatole looked at the packet of breaded chicken fillets, stuffed with garlic butter, in his hand and wondered whether his wife had disastrously mixed up her envelopes.
