Finally got round to reading this!

I'm a bit split on this book. It seemed like a series of short stories that weren't always strongly linked. I'm not a big fan of short stories as I don't like reading them one after the other, I much prefer novels. However the writing was lovely and some of the individual stories were very good.

I didn't like the ending as I couldn't see how it connected to the rest of the book and it was a depressing way to finish.

I would have enjoyed this more if we had spent most of the time with Olive as she was such an interesting, complex character. It reminded me of Anne Tyler's writing where people who are trying to be nice end up making things worse.

I finished it some time ago and realise I never left a review.

I found it hard going. It took me ages to get into it and every time I did, a story abruptly came to an end.
Some of the writing was quite inspired but the bittiness of it kept jarring, as did the shift away from Olive. Bit of a far fetched mannerism I thought.
I realised why Olive made me feel so uncomfortable in the story where she goes to visit her son in Brooklyn or was it Queens? Where he moved to with his new partner. I suddenly realised Olive reminds me far too much of my mother...
I would give this book 5/10.
